From the Ship to Your Minibus
Four cruise ports have their own page. Each shows how the ship, the terminal and the road connect, which matters more than many passengers expect.
Port by port
Civitavecchia is Rome's cruise port, but it is not in Rome: Piazza Venezia is about 71 km away, some 1 h 20 min by road, so a shore day in the capital is long. Private cars cannot drive onto the quays, and vehicles entering the terminal areas need a permit from the terminal operator, arranged by the company supplying your minibus. Naples is the opposite: the terminal stands in the city centre, with Pompeii about 35 minutes away. In Genoa, the terminals are a few minutes on foot from Piazza Principe station.
Venice: check the berth first
Since August 2021 large ships may not pass San Marco and the Giudecca, so calls are spread between Marittima, San Basilio, Fusina and Porto Marghera. The berth is on your cruise documents; send it with your request, because Fusina is about 19 km from Piazzale Roma.
What travellers ask us
Can the minibus wait beside the ship?
It depends on the port. In Civitavecchia, free port shuttles link every berth with Largo della Pace at the entrance; at San Basilio in Venice, vehicles may only set down, with no parking.
Which airport suits Civitavecchia?
Fiumicino, about 66 km away, roughly an hour in light traffic.
Is a day in Rome from the ship realistic?
Yes, if you plan around the all-aboard time. With well over an hour each way, choose two or three sights rather than a long list.
