From Malpensa to Milan, Como or Lake Maggiore
Malpensa sits well outside the city, north-west towards Varese and about 53 km from Milan's Duomo, so it is often a better gateway for the lakes than for the city itself. Tell us which terminal you land at and where you are heading, and a partner's minibus with driver collects you.
Two terminals, two sets of rules
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are separate buildings, joined by a free shuttle bus and by the Malpensa Express trains. The pick-up arrangements differ between them, so check the terminal on your booking before you fly.
At Terminal 1 the arrivals lane is behind barriers and open only to authorised vehicles, and operators apply to the airport for access in advance. Number-plate cameras allow 15 minutes in the arrivals and departures zones, so the driver arrives close to your exit time rather than early. At Terminal 2, buses use dedicated bays on the north arrivals front.

Why the driver does not wait at the door
The free waiting area between the terminals, known as the Polmone, is closed to professional passenger transport, minibuses included. In practice the driver waits elsewhere and moves to the pick-up once you are through baggage reclaim. A message from the group leader on landing, and another with bags in hand, keeps everything relaxed.
These arrangements come from an ENAC ordinance issued in August 2026, and Malpensa's layout changes with building work, so the operator checks the details again shortly before your date.
The terminals in brief
- Terminal 2 (a separate building, linked to Terminal 1 by a free shuttle bus and by the Malpensa Express trains)
- Terminal 1 (departures level, arrivals level and the railway station level)
Worth knowing about Milan Malpensa Airport
- Torino (Piazza Castello) is about 137 km by road, about 2 h in light traffic.
- Stresa, on Lake Maggiore, is about 51 km by road from Terminal 1, about 1 h 5 min in light traffic.
- Como (Piazza Duomo) is about 52 km by road, about 1 h in light traffic.
- From 15 September to 30 October 2026, works in the short-stay car park between the Terminal 2 arrivals and departures areas change the traffic layout there (ENAC Ordinance 8/2026); check before travel.
- TILO line S50 runs hourly from Malpensa to Ticino in Switzerland (Mendrisio, Lugano, Bellinzona) via Varese.
- Malpensa Express trains serve both terminals: from Milano Cadorna every 30 minutes (about 37 minutes to Terminal 1), and from Milano Centrale via Porta Garibaldi every 30 minutes.
- Malpensa is far from Milano, north-west of the city near Varese; allow for the long road transfer.
Lakes first, city later
Stresa on Lake Maggiore is about 51 km from Terminal 1, a little over an hour, and Como roughly 52 km, about an hour. A lakeside wedding or a family week by the water can therefore start straight from arrivals, without a detour through Milan.
For the city, allow around 1 h 5 min to the Duomo in light traffic and more at peak times. Central Milan's Area C admits only Euro VI buses, so the operator checks that the vehicle qualifies. Turin is about 137 km away, some two hours on the road.
What travellers ask us
Could we take the train into Milan instead?
Yes. Malpensa Express trains leave both terminals for Milano Cadorna and for Milano Centrale, each every 30 minutes. Travelling light, that is simple; with ski bags or a wedding dress in a garment bag, door-to-door travel is kinder.
Is Malpensa handy for Switzerland?
For Ticino, yes. TILO line S50 runs hourly to Mendrisio, Lugano and Bellinzona by way of Varese, and a minibus can make the same journey by road if your group would rather keep its luggage together.
Where exactly do we meet the driver?
Malpensa publishes no meeting point for groups. The operator gives you one when you book, matched to your terminal and to where a vehicle of your size may legally stop.
