The Accessible Minibus: Boarding Without Steps
An accessible minibus lets wheelchair users board by ramp or lift and travel secured in their own chair, alongside the rest of the group. It is the vehicle for care homes and day centres, mixed-mobility families, and accessible airport or cruise transfers.
How the space works
Wheelchair positions replace some of the seats, so the number of passengers depends on the layout: the more chairs, the fewer seats. Each position has securing points for the wheelchair, and the positions also take room from the luggage area, which matters on a transfer day.
The driver holds category D1, the licence for buses of up to sixteen passengers and 8 m in length. Ask for the exact layout with the quote, because two vehicles of the same size can be fitted quite differently.

What it is like on board
- The EU rights to assistance for disabled passengers cover scheduled bus and coach services of 250 km or more; on a private hire, accessibility is arranged with each booking
- Seated occupants over three years old must use the seat belts and restraints the bus is fitted with (art. 172 c. 6, Codice della Strada)
- Category D1 licence for up to 16 passengers besides the driver and up to 8 m long
- Lift or ramp access with wheelchair securing points
Safety on board
Passengers older than three wear the belts and restraint systems fitted to the bus whenever seated. Ask the operator how a wheelchair user is restrained in the vehicle offered, and whether a passenger who would rather move to a seat can do so.
Booking ahead
The EU's assistance rights for disabled travellers belong to scheduled routes of at least 250 km, not to private hire. On a hire like this, accessibility is arranged booking by booking, so the details you send are what the operator works from.
List the number of wheelchair users, the type and size of each chair, any powered chairs, the help needed at boarding, and every address on the route. If a carer or companion travels too, count them in.
What travellers ask us
How early should we book?
As early as you can, especially for busy dates, so the operator can find the right layout.
Can carers travel with the group?
Yes. Count them in the passenger total, and the layout is chosen to fit both chairs and seats.
Is it suitable for a cruise or airport transfer?
Yes, but luggage room is limited. Mention suitcases so a second vehicle can carry the bags if needed.
