Venice: Where the Minibus Stops and the Boat Begins
Every trip into Venice has a handover. Your minibus brings you to the edge of the lagoon city, and from there it is water and footpaths. Choosing the right handover point is most of the planning, and it is easier than it sounds.
A pass for almost the whole city
Venice's bus zone does not stop at the island. It covers nearly the entire municipality, Mestre included, and every tourist bus shows a pass issued by AVM, the company the city appoints. Driving straight through costs nothing only on the tangenziale round Mestre and on the spur to the airport.
You can buy it on the web or at a check-in, and its type follows your destination: Lido plus mainland, or the old city itself. If your whole group is sleeping in a hotel inside the municipality, a reduced hotel pass may apply. Coming in from Padova or the A4, your driver can stop at the Petroli check-in, staffed from early morning until 20:15.

Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto or Fusina
No road reaches San Marco. Vehicles end at Piazzale Roma, at Tronchetto or at Fusina across the lagoon. Tronchetto normally allows stops of up to an hour; a trial in 2026 allowed two hours beside the People Mover until the end of October. That shuttle links Tronchetto with the cruise terminal area and Piazzale Roma.
Fusina is the calm option: a large coach terminal reached from the Riviera del Brenta, with boats across to the city. Inside the historic centre there is no official set-down point, so the operator confirms the stopping point that suits your hotel or boat.
Flying in to Venice
Stops worth making in Venice
- Riviera del Brenta villas (Villa Pisani at Stra, day trip) — Mainland villas along the Brenta between Venice and Padova; the Fusina coach terminal is on this side of the lagoon.
- Lido di Venezia — The Lido is the island where coaches can drive; the ZTL BUS pass is priced by destination (mainland and Lido, or the historic city).
- Murano, Burano and Torcello — Lagoon islands reached only by boat.
- Ponte di Rialto and the Grand Canal — Reached on foot or by waterbus from Piazzale Roma or the railway station (Venezia Santa Lucia).
- Piazza San Marco, Basilica di San Marco and Palazzo Ducale — The historic city has no roads: coaches end at Piazzale Roma or at Tronchetto, and groups continue on foot or by water (ACTV waterbus lines or private boats).

The access fee and the islands
The Contributo di Accesso is an entry fee that day-trippers owe on certain peak dates. Next year's dates had not been announced at the start of October 2026; look them up when your trip is settled. Murano, Burano and Torcello are reached only by boat, while the Lido is the one island where your vehicle can actually drive.
Mainland days that suit a small group
The Brenta villas are close: Villa Pisani at Stra is about 45 minutes away. Padova and Treviso are each about 50 minutes, Vicenza and its Palladian villas around 1 h 10 min. Valdobbiadene in the Prosecco hills takes about 1 h 30 min, a lovely run in autumn. Bassano del Grappa and the Dolomites at Cortina make longer, fuller days.
What travellers ask us
How far is Marco Polo airport from Piazzale Roma?
Roughly 15 km, so allow some 25 minutes on quiet roads. If you fly into Treviso instead, count on about 30 km and 50 minutes.
Can the minibus drop us at our hotel near San Marco?
No vehicle can. The road ends at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, and the last stretch is on foot or by water: a waterbus or a private boat.
We are staying in Mestre. Do we still need the bus pass?
Yes. The zone covers almost the whole municipality, Mestre included, so the vehicle displays a pass even if you never cross to the island. A group sleeping in Venice may qualify for the hotel pass.
