Naples, Pompeii and the Coast in a Minibus
Naples is where a minibus earns its keep. The city's lanes are tight, the Amalfi Coast road is closed to full-size coaches, and the great sites around the bay are spread out. A smaller vehicle with a local driver turns all of that into a manageable day.
The bus ticket, and when a short vehicle is exempt
Naples has four bus ZTLs: San Martino, Posillipo, the old Centro Storico, and the long Toledo - Decumani - Carmine zone. To enter them, a vehicle with nine or more passenger seats needs a ticket displayed behind the windscreen. The list of exemptions includes vehicles no longer than 7.36 m with Euro 4 or a later engine. Certain exemptions must be applied for every year; your operator works out where your vehicle stands.
Across the whole city, tourist buses may park only in the listed areas. Within Toledo - Decumani - Carmine, authorised vehicles keep to set streets, Corso Umberto I among them.

Where your group steps out
For the archaeological museum, a short-stay area sits on Piazza Museo, right before the steps. The Catacombs of San Gennaro have their own on Via Capodimonte. For the old centre and Spaccanapoli, Piazza Cavour by Porta San Gennaro and Via Depretis are handy. Via Cesario Console, Via Chiatamone and Piazza Vittoria serve the Palazzo Reale, Piazza del Plebiscito and the Castel dell'Ovo. Up in Posillipo, Viale Virgilio and Via Petrarca have room to pause above the sea.

Arriving by cruise ship
Ruins, the volcano and the islands
Allow about 20 minutes to reach Herculaneum, and roughly 35 for Pompeii. The road up Vesuvius to the start of the crater path takes about 40 minutes; Pozzuoli and the Campi Flegrei about 30. The Reggia di Caserta is roughly 40 minutes north, and Paestum's temples just over two hours south. For Capri, Ischia or Procida, the driver drops you at Molo Beverello, right by Piazza del Municipio, and the ferries take over.
The Amalfi Coast is minibus country
Full-size coaches are banned from the SS163 coast road (the limits are 10.36 m in length and 4 m in height), which makes a minibus the obvious way to go. Positano is about 1 h 25 min from Naples and Amalfi about 1 h 20 min. In busy periods the road runs on alternate number plates by date; the 2027 calendar is not yet out, so the operator checks it against your day.
What travellers ask us
How far is Naples airport from the centre?
Only around 8 km. From Capodichino to Piazza del Municipio takes some 20 minutes when the roads are clear. Allow longer at peak times.
Is Sorrento an easy day from Naples?
Yes, about 1 h 10 min each way. It pairs well with Pompeii, which lies roughly on the way.
We are going to a match at the Maradona. Where does the vehicle wait?
The area in front of the stadium, on the Via Marino side, is one of the city's long-stay coach areas, and Piazzale Tecchio is nearby too.
