Coach & Minibus Hire in Italy

Naples from the Gangway, by Minibus

Few cruise ports put you this close to the action. The Stazione Marittima stands on the Molo Angioino, beside Castel Nuovo and looking onto Piazza Municipio, so the city starts the moment you walk off the ship.

Pompeii, Herculaneum or Sorrento

The classic shore day heads south along the bay. Pompeii is about 27 km by road, some 35 minutes in light traffic, and Herculaneum is closer at about 12 km, around 20 minutes. A small group can manage both on a long call. Book group entry with each site well ahead.

Sorrento is about 50 km, roughly an hour and ten minutes. Beyond it the Amalfi Coast road is closed to full-size coaches, and some dates bring alternating number-plate rules, which is one more reason a minibus suits that coast. The operator checks the current rules for your date.

How the city's bus zones affect you

Four bus zones cover the parts of Naples a visitor wants most: Toledo - Decumani - Carmine, Centro Storico, San Martino and Posillipo, all in force day and night. Once a vehicle has more than eight seats for passengers, it must carry a ticket to enter them, bought online in advance and displayed on the windscreen. A car with driver for up to eight passengers sits below that line.

Buses may only wait in the city's listed coach areas, such as the long-stay bays along the port on Via Nuova Marina and the short-stay ones on Via Depretis near the Molo Angioino. The city lists no pick-up spot at the terminal, which is why the operator tells you where to find your driver.

Where the ships tie up

  • The port has about 75 berths in all; the Immacolatella and Autostrade gates are open 24 hours
  • Calata Beverello (about 165 m), next to the Molo Angioino, is the terminal for fast ferries and hydrofoils to the islands of the Gulf of Naples and the Sorrento peninsula
  • Molo Angioino quays: south side about 493 m, head about 120 m and north side about 388 m, all about 10 m deep
  • Stazione Marittima on the Molo Angioino: the cruise terminal in the city centre, next to Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino) and Piazza Municipio

Capri without a vehicle

Next door to the cruise terminal, Calata Beverello is the quay for fast ferries and hydrofoils to Capri and the Sorrento peninsula. If the island is your plan, you may need no road transport at all, or only a short ride back from Sorrento.

What travellers ask us

How far is Naples airport from the ship?

About 8 km to Piazza del Municipio, next to the terminal: roughly 20 minutes in light traffic, which makes a fly-in, sail-out day easy to plan.

Can we explore the old town on foot?

Yes. The terminal faces Piazza Municipio and Castel Nuovo, so the historic centre begins at the quay. A vehicle helps most for the trips out of town.

Does every minibus need the Naples bus ticket?

The ticket is for vehicles with more than eight passenger seats entering the four bus zones. The operator buys it in advance for the vehicle booked.
