Coach & Minibus Hire in Italy

From Marco Polo to the Edge of the Lagoon

Venice's airport is on the mainland, at Tessera, and no road vehicle goes further than Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto. A minibus with driver is still the easiest way to carry everyone's luggage to the water's edge, or to skip the lagoon and head inland.

Where the road runs out

Piazzale Roma is about 15 km from the terminal, around 25 minutes in light traffic. From there your group walks or carries on by water, so nobody is dropped at a hotel door in the historic city. If you are staying in Mestre or elsewhere on the mainland, the minibus can take you right to the entrance.

Venice requires tourist buses to display a pass for its bus zone, which covers almost the whole municipality, Mestre included; only the Mestre bypass and its spur to the airport are exempt. The operator buys the pass. The city's access fee for day visitors to the historic centre is a separate matter, charged on set days, and its 2027 calendar has not been published yet.

An airport in the middle of building work

Work on the new railway link has moved the coach park into the short-stay car park facing the terminal, with its own number-plate cameras, and the roads around it change in phases. Charges apply there and in the car-with-driver areas, which since July 2026 number five instead of one, with waits of up to an hour.

The best spot to find your driver can therefore shift between booking and landing. Marco Polo names no meeting place for groups, so the operator confirms one shortly before you travel.

The terminals in brief

  • One passenger terminal, on the mainland at Tessera

Worth knowing about Venice Marco Polo Airport

  • Treviso is about 29 km by road, about 35 min in light traffic.
  • Verona (Piazza Bra) is about 127 km by road, about 1 h 50 min in light traffic.
  • A railway link between the airport and the Venezia–Trieste line is under construction; it is not open yet.
  • Express buses to Venezia (Piazzale Roma) and to Mestre leave from outside exit 3: stop C for Venezia and stop D for Mestre. City bus line 5 (aerobus) also runs to Piazzale Roma, and water-bus services link the airport's dock with the lagoon.
  • Coaches cannot enter historic Venezia: road vehicles stop at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto (about 15 km from the airport, about 25 min), and groups continue on foot or by water.

Inland instead of onto the water

Plenty of small groups use Marco Polo for the Veneto rather than the lagoon. Treviso is about 29 km away, roughly 35 minutes, and Verona around 127 km, close to two hours. For a group staying in Venice, the Tronchetto coach area allows stops of up to an hour, enough to unload calmly before the boat.

What travellers ask us

Can we go straight onto a boat?

Water-buses leave from the airport's dock for the lagoon, and express buses leave for Piazzale Roma from outside exit 3. With a group and suitcases, many travellers prefer the minibus to Piazzale Roma and the short hop by water from there.

Can we take a train from Marco Polo?

Not for now. The rail connection to the Venice–Trieste line is still being built, so road and water are the only ways out.

Can the driver take us to St Mark's Square?

No road reaches it. Wheels go no further than Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto; after that you walk or take a boat. If anyone in the group finds walking hard, mention it so the water leg can be planned with care.
