Milan Bergamo: Landing beside Bergamo, Not Milan

Despite the name, Milan Bergamo airport is at Orio al Serio on the edge of Bergamo, some 56 km by road from the Duomo in Milan. For a small group that is often good news: Città Alta and Lake Garda are both closer than you might expect.

How pick-ups work at Orio al Serio

Since July 2026 tourist buses stop and wait in their own signposted area in the arrivals zone. Cars with driver drop their passengers at a pair of bays by the limited-traffic zone entrance and wait in car parks P1 and P2; picking people up anywhere else is forbidden.

The airport roads have a 30 km/h limit, stopping outside the marked areas is banned at any hour, and buses switch their engines off while they wait. The operator tells you which area your vehicle uses and where the driver will meet you.

Bergamo before Milan

Bergamo's upper town, Città Alta, is only 8 km or so from arrivals, twenty minutes by road, which makes an afternoon in the upper town an easy first stop before a hotel in Milan, about 1 h 10 min from the airport in light traffic.

Trains do not serve the airport yet. Work is under way on a line from Bergamo station, announced for December 2026; meanwhile the number 1 city bus takes about ten minutes to the station.

The terminals in brief

  • One passenger terminal at Orio al Serio, next to Bergamo

Worth knowing about Milan Bergamo Airport

  • Como (Piazza Duomo) is about 81 km by road, about 1 h 35 min in light traffic.
  • Verona (Piazza Bra) is about 118 km by road, about 1 h 40 min in light traffic.
  • Desenzano del Garda (Lake Garda) is about 80 km by road, about 1 h 10 min in light traffic.
  • Coaches run from the terminal to Milano Centrale, Verona, Brescia and Desenzano del Garda.
  • A railway link from Bergamo station to the airport is under construction; RFI has said it is due to open by December 2026. Until then there is no train station at the airport.
  • Bergamo (Città Alta) is about 8 km by road, about 20 min in light traffic; city bus line 1 links the airport with Bergamo station in about 10 minutes.
  • Despite its name, the airport is next to Bergamo, about 50 km east of Milano.

Lake Garda one way, Lake Como the other

Lake Garda's Desenzano is roughly 80 km, an hour and ten minutes, and Verona's Piazza Bra about 118 km, nearer 1 h 40 min. Como lies in the opposite direction, about 81 km and 1 h 35 min, which is why a Lake Como party often does better landing at Malpensa. In summer 2027 the opera festival at the Arena di Verona runs from 11 June to 11 September, an easy evening out from a base on Lake Garda.

Scheduled coaches link the terminal with Milano Centrale, Brescia, Verona and Desenzano, handy for anyone in the group arriving on a different flight.

What travellers ask us

Is it really a Milan airport?

It serves Milan, but it stands beside Bergamo, about 50 km east of the city. Allow more than an hour by road to the centre even in light traffic.

Will the new train help us?

Once open, it will link the airport with Bergamo station. It was announced for December 2026, so check whether it is actually running before you rely on it.

Where does our vehicle wait?

A tourist bus uses the signposted bus area in arrivals; a car with driver waits in P1 or P2. The operator confirms which one applies to the vehicle you book.
