Coach & Minibus Hire in Italy

Day Trips at Your Own Pace, in a Minibus with a Driver

A day trip in your own minibus means leaving when the group is ready, stopping for the view and lingering where lunch is good. What shapes the day in Italy is less the distance than the rules each town sets for buses, and a minibus counts as one.

Every town writes its own bus rules

Italian councils close their historic centres with ZTL limited-traffic zones and may charge for entry; on top of that, many cities run a separate permit system for tourist coaches. A minibus, legally a bus, falls under those coach systems. There is no national pass, so the operator applies city by city along the route.

Rome has had a coach plan since 2019, with three bus zones: A and C apply 24 hours a day, B from 05:00 to midnight, every day, and the Colosseum and Vatican areas follow rules of their own. Naples has four bus zones, also active day and night; vehicles with more than eight passenger seats need an access ticket bought online, and park only in the listed coach areas.

Where the group gets on and off

In Siena passengers board and leave only at the designated coach stopping places near the historic centre, and buses wait at Il Fagiolone. Verona asks for a PASS ZTL Bus, keeps parking to the Terminal Bus Parcheggio Centro and the Stadio C coach park, and lets groups off in stops lasting 5 to 15 minutes. In Venice, Piazzale Roma is as far as any road goes; from there it is walking or the boats.

From Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast road bars buses longer than 10.36 m, which makes the minibus the natural vehicle for Positano and Amalfi. No official coach stop is published for Positano, so the operator confirms where the group gets out.

Rules to know before you set off

  • Rome has had a tourist coach plan since 2019, with three coach limited-traffic zones (ZTL BUS A, B and C): A and C apply 24 hours a day and B from 05:00 to 24:00, every day; the Colosseum and Vatican areas have their own rules, and coaches need a permit
  • In Verona, tourist coaches need a PASS ZTL Bus, may park only at the Terminal Bus Parcheggio Centro or the Stadio C coach park, and set down at designated stops for 5 to 15 minutes
  • On long days out, the EU rules allow at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), with a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours

Long days and winter roads

A driver may be at the wheel for 9 hours in a day, or 10 on two days a week, and stops for 45 minutes after four and a half hours. Sorrento to Pompeii takes about 45 minutes; Rome to Orvieto just under two hours. In winter, signs on some roads announce an ordinance making winter tyres or chains compulsory.

What travellers ask us

Can a minibus take us into Venice?

Only as far as Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. The city beyond is on foot or by boat, so set the meeting point there.

Can we change the route during the day?

Within reason. City permits are bought in advance, so adding a new town on the day may not work; list every place you might like to visit.

How many stops fit in one day?

Two or three main stops and a lunch are comfortable. Remember the driving limit includes the journey back.
